Making Fire

Pretend once again you’re lost in the woods. You’ve already secured your source of water, you’re built your shelter, so now what do you need? Likely, you’d want a fire for warmth, security, cooking, or any combination thereof.

So you brought waterproof matches, right? No? Ah well, we can work around that…

Even without matches you can still start a fire. One method that uses only ingredients readily available is rubbing two sticks together, although it might not be as easy as it sounds. It can and apparently does work, but you may have to practice a little bit.

Of course, there are many other methods to make fire, like using a concave mirror or a lens in the same way kids burn ants with a magnifying glass. If you’ve got your ice maker working, you can even make fire from ice.

No matter how you make your fire, be smart about it. Make sure you have a fire pit so it doesn’t burn the rest of the forest down, and make sure it’s extinguished when you leave. It may also be a good idea to build a small fire that you can sit around, as opposed to a great roaring bonfire that will use up all your gathered fuel in a 10-minute blaze.
